October Announcements – Aging in Place Meeting & Bundle Up Program needs

As the days grow shorter and the thermometer dips, we can’t help but set our eyes on the upcoming cooler weather. This sets the gears moving for the Project Holiday Team, along with the Heating Assistance Program and Operation Bundle Up to ramp up activities. In addition, the monthly meeting of Aging in Place will soon take place. Be sure to read on for details.

Aging in Place meeting, Tues, Oct 21

On Tuesday Oct 21, at 10am, Aging in Place will meet for its monthly meeting at the Bartlett Circle community building.  Look forward to learning more about the following items:

  1. Terri Pease has written a book about Caregiving with Parkinson’s Disease.  Her talk “Let’s Talk about Caregiving” will cover all things caregiving.  There will be time for questions.
  2. Members of the Yarmouth Tree Committee will speak about their survey and will be seeking input.
  3. Lisa (YCS), Courteney (Library), and Dannielle (Southern Maine Agency on Aging Resource Specialist) will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.
  4. Update on the Snow Shovel Brigade.
  5. Royal River Players will introduce Haunted Yarmouth
  6. Special presentation at the library Oct 29 – You’re going to die.  Why not die Well?
  7. Covid/Vaccine updates.

Bundle Up Program

YCAN works closely with Yarmouth Community Services to manage the yearly Operation Bundle Up program, which distributes jackets, snowpants, waterproof gloves and boots to Yarmouth residents. Donations are once again being sought for this winter. Of greatest need are men’s coats plus boots of all sizes for men, women and children. Waterproof gloves are always needed too for all ages and sizes. Please be sure that all donations are either new or gently worn. All zippers, buttons, velcro fasteners should be present and in good working order. All items donated should be clean too. Donations may be dropped at Yarmouth Community Services in the Yarmouth Town Hall lower level or in the drop box at Merrill Memorial Library. Please help us spread the word about the need for men’s coats and boots for all ages and sizes. Thanks for the help!

This photo reminds us that the Shovel Brigade is also a service of the Aging in Place program. If you’d like to be a volunteer shoveler for those who are unable to shovel their own walkways OR if you are in need of help shoveling, please contact Leigh at leighmk2050@gmail.com.

Holiday Food Baskets & Gifts

The Yarmouth Community Food Pantry is presently accepting names of qualified families and individuals interested in receiving a Thanksgiving or Holiday food basket. Simply sign up at the food pantry during open hours Tuesdays & Fridays from 10am to noon or call (207)844-3320   to sign up. Project Holiday information will be distributed through the schools or applications may be downloaded on the YCAN website after October 20th.

The YCAN board of directors meets on the second Tuesday of every month (except July & Aug) at 8:30 in St Barts Church. If you’d like to learn more about YCAN’s programs, feel free to attend the meetings. You’ll immediately become a friend of YCAN.
